A: Turbocharge it, you’ll easily make more power than a B16A swap, even with the stock engine (assuming it’s healthy). You could build your own kit for around $1,500, or buy a pre-assembled kit for $2,500-3,000. On top of the kit, you’ll need an engine management system, to pay a professional to tune it (for the most power and for reliability), and possibly injectors (if the kit doesn’t come with them).

A: It depends on just how much faster you want. If you want another 10 hp, maybe a little more, go with the basic “breathing mods” – cold air intake, performance header, and a cat-back exhaust.

Is that a Civic DX, CX, or LX? If so, installing the intake manifold from a Civic EX will give you a little bit more power.

Who cares? It doesn’t indicate how fast my car is, how well I drive, or anything else.

A: Diesel Turbine from an M-1 Abrams Assault tank will really pep that puppy up.
The cheapest go fast goodie is NOS (Nitrus Oxide) but it is dangerous when used by the in experienced. A turbo is probably what you want. How fast you want to go is directly proportional to how thick your wallet is.

ok for the back, 96-98 had amber turn signals, 99-00 coupes had clear.
basically i think thats it for the 1996-1998 civic ex, compared to the 1999-2000 ex
now for comparing the 1999-2000 civic ex vs si.
the si is a upgraded ex, upgraded from the 1.6 SOHC D-series motor to the 1.6 DOHC VTEC B16A2, so newer engine trans computer axels.
also since it has a bigger more powerful motor it had a newer designed cluster.
si for that year also added rear disc brakes which the ex didn’t have.
si also had orange interior lights to backlight the gauges hvac panel as shown:

A: yes, you will need a harness to repair the damage.
a kit usually includes the frame template, etc so the carriage fits proerl. it’s not hard to do, but plan on enough time to accomplish your task.

Its being paid for by walmart’s insurance company since they messed up my car after an oil change. But they were quoted 2867.00 to replace the engine, timing belt and water pump. Is this price fair or right? I need to know becasue if its too high I can take th car somewhere else cheaper

A: Take the check that Walmart is giving you and tell them to screw off. It doesn’t cost $2867 to drop a engine in a 1997 Honda Civic. If your Civic was a DX or LX then it had the D16Y7 engine, and if it was a EX it has a D16Y8 engine. Those engines are dirt cheap and you can buy them used at the junkyard or even a low mileage JDM engine for $300-$500. To have a reputable mechanic that knows about Honda to swap it in should only charge about $200-$300 bringing for total cost for parts and labor well under $1000.
Q: 1997 honda, thrown rod, how much if i sold as is…?
I have a 1997 Honda civic Ex. It started to make a rattle noise in the engine, after trying to eliminate the cheaper possibilities we took it to the auto shop and found out that it thew a rod and we need to get a new engine; however, I’m a bit skeptical to just replace the engine, cause that would cost us anywhere from 2-3 grand, and I am afraid its just not worth putting that much into it. I just dont want to put that much into it and turn around and need to replace other things on it, and it become a money pit. I am looking for advice on what I may be able to sell it as is. The condition of the car is wonderful, no major body or interior damage, the car has been modified (was when i bought it). Here is a picture of my honda, with it having a thrown rod what would be a resonable price to ask for it.

let me just say, that that price i listed wasnt just for the engine nor a actual amount just from what other people have told me they have paid, but for the work, its going to be around 800 for the work, and they said they can get a crate engine over seas for 800.. so probably around 1800 at the least to get the engine and get it put in. I really dont have an option to shop around, i live in a small town far from most places and we dont have to many choices.. so i guess that that gets me a little screwed in prices probably.. Thanks for the input, we think we have a few ideas of how to handle our situtation
A: AS-IS I would say 2,000 would be a fair price. I buy and sell cars daily, and 2K would be what I would ask and not take ANYTHING less than $1,800, But first of all I would undertake the repair myself (or do it in my shop, keeping my mechanics busy during slow / spare time). Hondas sell FAST and for full book OR BETTER. I try not to pass up on Honda’s and Toyotas. Hell I see Cavaliers that need engines for a grand, and repaired they are only worth 3K tops.
Well considering that your mechanic can get an engine for $800 and and additional $800 for install it is not that far out of line. The fact that you live in a small town would definately hurt you to sell as-is as your market is small not many fix and flip people. With $1,600 invested you have a car that you could sell nationally on autotrader or ebay motors. I did a search (Nationally- aka any distance) on autotrader . com for only 97 civic’s the average price was $5,135, the average for a 97 EX Coupe is $5,393, and clean cars are $6,500 – 7K meaning that you are giving away $5,400 based on a sale at 7K minus repairs at $1,600.
Don’t listen to the pundits here, do your research, I’ve bought and sold hundreds of cars over the years. I started out buying deals just like yours, cars that had serious mechanical problems that the owners wanted OUT of but were in otherwise good condition, I would make the necessary repairs, put the car in top notch condition and get top dollar, Honda is an IN DEMAND car in my market.
Actually it is pretty nice from a cosmetic standpoint, first thing I would do is change the bottom end bearings and have the crank machined if necessary, the cost of re doing the bottom end is around $100 for main and rod bearings, plus labor (not a problem for me 
) All that is entailed is dropping the pan and pulling the rod caps, examining the Journals , if they are okay replace with new bearings and rock on, if all the bearings show significant wear check the mains and rplace them as well. Never re-install a used bearing! Also make sure caps are replaced in the order and orentation that they were removed. Whole process takes an hour and a half max!
Q: Will a Honda 97 Civic LX head fit on a 97 Civic DX Motor?
I have a 1997 Honda Civic DX. It has had overheating problems. I have replaced the thermostat, water pump, plugs, wires, distributor and such. Radiator seems to be fine so I am not replacing that. I cant tell if the head gasket is blown. The car itself runs fine, poor starting aside(water is getting into the cylinders) Or if the head itself is cracked/warped or something. I can get a LX head for cheap so I figured id ask if it would fit & see if anyone has any suggestions of stuff that may fix it. (Overheating, bad starting but that’s from water getting in the cylinders which id imagine is from the head and/or valves)
A: You most likely are dealing with a head gasket issue–save the money on a diff head and pull the one off your car and spend $40.00 and send it to a machine shop and have it milled and pressure checked. These heads dont just crack unless there is a time you have not mentioned that this motor has been overheated. If you get it pressure checked they can tell you if it is cracked. Get with a local garage and they can direct you to a machine shop that will check these issues. So send your head out and buy an upper end gasket kit(advise to buy at least an OEM headgasket if you choose to go aftermarket on the others)!!!!

This is a good? It only has 82k miles on it. The compressor is not there for the a/c , just the fan. Everything else works great. ITs probally from a rich guy since its a in rich place… Wondering why its cheap I asked cause hes just want to get rid of it. No lower then 1500 tho he said. Whats your opinion?

A: You will get what you pay for, CHEAP PARTS usually don’t fit right, have a high failure rating, and just are not worth the time and money to try to modify and replace, but it’s your money

mpg (though they’re all pretty similar)
i need an automatic
right now the costs of the cars are in this order: lowest to highest

i plan to drive this car around 4-5 years, and i want to not have to bother with maintenance so much and if i do, which car has the cheapest? i heard civics have the cheapest parts, but a civic is about $1000 more than a tercel.
but i don’t know how much maintenance i’ll have to put into the tercel and if i do, would the prices add up??

A: I’ve owned a 92 Civic, 3 Corollas (89, 92, 95), and 90 Tercel, but not Sentra or Camry. And I am a college student, AND I bought all of these cars for $1000 or under. I also bought all of them with my own hard earned money, so I know the value of a reliable and easy to maintain car. I am also training to be a mechanic so I know which is easier to get parts for, etc…
The most enjoyable, reliable, and best overall car would be the Corolla. I had a 95 Corolla and currently drive a 92 Civic. They both are cars that can run up to 200k miles and can still be good. The Corolla has a little more room and a little more power. The Civic does cost much, much less for parts. Though overall the Corolla faired me the best, and was the most reliable. It also sold for the most. It is the easiest car I have ever worked on, and thats between hundreds.
I think you should focus on these two cars, the Civic and Corolla. They are equal all around, its just availability. Matter of fact I am selling my 93 Honda Civic and getting a newer 2000 Civic to finish out this last year of College to get my bachelors degree. They are really good cars.
BTW, Tercels are okay, just I find the engines weak, and sometimes they cost within 2 or 3 hundred of the Corolla which is way better. But if you get the Tercel its okay too.
